Port of Vancouver Buying Green Power

Port of Vancouver Buying "Green Power"

The Port of Vancouver, long an importer of wind power-generating turbines, has now signed on to purchase some of their output. Port officials have agreed to  buy 60 percent of the agency's electricity from eastern Oregon and Washington wind farms, through a one-year $18,018 agreement with Green Mountain Energy.

Because the wind doesn't always blow when the lights are on and individual electrons can't be tracked once loaded onto the power grid, Green Mountain does not guarantee that the power used by the port was actually generated at its wind farms. Instead, the port's cash will go toward energy credits that pay for the development of new wind power sources to increase the amount of wind-generated electricity on the grid.

The port's agreement with Green Mountain will be reviewed after a year.
